1. Site induction online form

Please complete the online Rookwood Site Induction. Note: this must be done before booking your site meeting with me at Rookwood.

2. Site meetings with the curator

I’m organising individual site meetings with teachers and artists in June and July. Please select a time you’d like to meet me from the available days on this online calendar. Note: If there isn’t a suitable day/time we can have an online meeting instead, please email me to arrange this.

3. Install Plan Risk Assessment online form

We’ll fill out the Install Plan Risk Assessment online form together at your site meeting if we have enough time at the end, or you can fill it out yourself afterwards.

4. Audio tour 

Exhibition visitors love hearing from students, teachers and artists, about their work on the audio tour. Please use the voice memo app on your phone to record up to 4 minutes talking about your work. Then email the file and written transcript to me.

Points to cover:

  • Introduce your name/s, class/year and school
  • Introduce the title of your artwork
  • Describe your artwork
  • Describe your artistic process creating this work 
  • Explain how this work relates to Rookwood Cemetery and/or the HIDDEN exhibition
  • Tell us what you’d like the viewer to take away from your work

5. Photos: permissions, work in progress, group photo and documentation

Permissions: Photos of teachers and students may be taken during installation, launch, and exhibition, we kindly request your cooperation regarding student photo permissions. We highly value the privacy and consent of students involved in HIDDEN. Therefore, we kindly ask you to inform us promptly if any students do not have photo permissions, ensuring their privacy is respected. Throughout this process, various photos will be taken to capture the fun and excitement of the exhibition. Thank you for your understanding and support in creating a positive and inclusive environment for everyone involved.

Work in progress photos: We’d like to share updates on social media about works being made, so if you have students photo permissions, please take some photos and email to: kath.fries@mmplm.com.au. Or when you post them on Instagram tag @hiddeninrookwood and @kathfries_curator and we’ll re-post from there.

Group photo: each artwork will have a webpage on the HIDDEN website. It’ll have your school’s name and year group/s, teachers and student names, photo of your installed work, work details, artwork statement, school logo, audio tour and audio tour transcript. We’d also like to include a photo of you and your class/group if you have photo permissions. (If not we’ll just have your school’s logo). Please email to: kath.fries@mmplm.com.au.

Photography and documentation: your work will be photographed by the HIDDEN team after your install is completed. This photo will be used for your catalogue-page, website-page and other media. If you take photos of your work during the exhibition, we’d appreciate getting copies of these photos too – please email them to me.

6. Artwork statement edits

All changes to titles, materials, artwork statements, including any sponsorship or thank-yous, must be made by 14 August. Please include your school logo and all the students’ names if possible. Please email to: kath.fries@mmplm.com.au.

7. Artists’ and Teachers’ Morning Tea

This is a great opportunity to meet some of the other artists and teachers who you’ll be exhibiting with and walk around the sculpture walk path together. This is an optional event and unfortunately on a school day, so don’t worry if you can’t attend. The event invitation will be sent in August, please RSVP then.

8. Artists' and Teachers’ meet w/ Julie Clarke-Jones, Dharug Custodian

We’re fortunate to work with Julie Clarke-Jones, Dharug Custodian and Traditional Knowledge Keeper, and I’m delighted to invite all the artists meet with her and learn more about Dharug history, culture, connection to Country. This is event on 21 September, will be a great opportunity to develop site-responsive art practices by learning more about First Nations knowledge and perspectives. This is an optional event and unfortunately on a school day, so don’t worry if you can’t attend. The event invitation will be sent in August, please RSVP then.

9. Install: scheduled start times

Please be aware that install runs over 9 days (Tuesday 3rd Oct to Wednesday 11th Oct) with 35 works being installed. It’s a very busy and exhausting time; so it’s important to plan, communicate and be well organised.

Once your install risk assessment has been approved, I'll send you the install booking schedule, so you can select the time and day you would like to start installing. Please book in your install date by 31 August. You’re welcome to bring students and/or additional adults to assist with install.

On your install day, you must meet me at your scheduled time, for a brief install and safety review, before you go to your site and start installing.

3 – 11 October (install)

 

10. Launch event

Invitations to public launch event will be emailed by 8 September. Please share with your students, school community, and networks. All welcome. The launch event will take place on Saturday 21 October, 2-4pm. There will be music, food, drinks, speeches, photographs and the award recipients will be announced.

11. VADEA connect event HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures 2023

A unique professional learning event for Secondary School Visual Art Teachers, presented by VADEA and HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures (both VADEA members and non-members are welcome to attend). Tuesday 24 October 2023, 4.30pm-6.30pm. This free event will include afternoon tea on arrival at All Souls Chapel, a curator walking tour with Kath Fries and artist talks, teacher talks on HIDDEN Schools works with Wendy Ramsay, self-Guided audio tour, ideas for excursions. Please let me know if you can attend ASAP, I’d love to have all the teachers there to talk about their works, students welcome too.

12. School excursions

We encourage you to bring a class to HIDDEN for an excursion. We’ll provide a school excursion Risk Assessment Document; complimentary printed map for each student; complimentary printed catalogue of artworks for each teacher and staff member; audio tour of each artwork explaining the artwork in the artist’s words. There’s an onsite café where food and drinks can be purchased. You might like to also visit the HIDDEN Satellite Exhibition at nearby McGlade Gallery, ACU Strathfield – which aims give an educational insight into artists working processes and studio practices creating their works for HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures. For an additional cost we can engage one of the artists to talk to your school group about their work in HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures.

13. Curator tours and artist talks

During the exhibition I’ll be running curator tours on Wednesday evenings 5-7pm and Saturday mornings 10am-12pm. It’s relaxed, friendly and enjoyable. I love having a few artists and teachers join these tours to be part of the conversations and talk about their work for about 5 mins each. If you would like to give a couple of artists talks, please book in on Wednesday Dusk Tours and a Saturday Morning Tours.

14. Closing event

On the final day of HIDDEN, Sunday 19 November, we’ll have a community bbq raising funds for a charity, music, curator tour and artist talks. It’ll be nice to gather together for a final event on the last day. Please book in if you’d like to give an artist talk (5min) about your work on the Closing Tour.

15. Deinstall

Deinstall is always much easier and quicker than installing! You’ll need to book in which day you plan to deinstall on the Deinstall booking schedule. I’ll follow this up with you after the exhibition opens in October. Please be aware that you cannot deinstall your work on the last day as the exhibition is open until sunset, when the cemetery closes.
